Friday November 6th through Sunday November 8th 2009 In an effort to foster deeper relationships within the arts community between artists the audiences for their work MARN has created the Salon Series. Each MARNSalon features work from MARN members (different members at each event). We then invite local curators to meet with the artists during a private reception in order to help the artist forge relationships with museum curators, gallery owners, and art dealers. Some of the curators participating in the program include Brady Roberts (MAM), Greame Reid (Museum of Wisconsin Art), Elaine Erickson (Gallery Owner), and many others. Then we open the show to the public on Friday night, where they can meet the artists in the show. Finally, to deepen connections within the art community we invite fellow artists to come and share their thoughts with our artists during the peer critique on Saturday. We are proud to have partnered with The Hotel for the Arts and The Sharon Lynne Wilson Center in order to present this series. MARNsalons are open to all artists in the Greater Milwaukee Area. Because this program is about being a professional artist we will only accept undergraduate students if they are in the second semester of their senior year. Graduate students are welcomed to submit work. Other requirements are: 1. Participants must be a MARN member in good standing
Tuesday November 10th, 2009 We all know what a drag it can be to find someone to collaborate with. First you post your stuff all over town and online. Then you slog through the responses trying to separate the serious prospects from the fluff. THEN you try to set up a time in each of your busy schedules to meet to see if you mesh. FINALLY you meet, just to discover there's no way you'd want to be in a band or other collaborative process with this person... so you're back to the beginning! Wouldn't it be great if you could cut out all that stuff and just get to the initial meeting? Well now you can, with MARN's "Speed Dating for Musicians". MARN will bring together a bunch of musicians in one room to meet for a night. Like regular speed dating you'll get roughly 5 minutes to meet each participating musician and see if you mesh. Then you can either choose to meet up again or if it doesn't fly move on to the next table. Afterward stick about for drinks and networking. $5 Suggested Donation : Free for MARNmembers
Saturday November 14th, 2009 We all understand the power of the media but wielding that power can be a challenge. Now more than ever "social" media outlets like Face Book and Twitter are becoming important tools for those looking to promote their events. Mary Louise Schumacher, of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Art City, will share some insights with you on writing an effective press release and using social media so your message gets noticed. $20/ $15 for MARN members
Saturday November 14th, 2009 You've sent out your press release and it got noticed! Suddenly you're faced with having to give an interview to a local media outlet… you freeze, now what? So often when we do finally get that interview we don't know how to handle ourselves. Dave Fantle, VP of Public Relations from Visit Milwaukee, will walk you through how to build talking points ensuring that you control the interview and keep the message clear. $20/ $15 for MARN members
November 28th, 2009 Noon Whether you're submitting your work for a juried show or competition or writing a grant you'll need to provide decent images of your work. So often these images are "make or break"; the deciding factors on getting that show or grant. Photographer Barbara Miner will go through the basics of shooting your work so you can increase your chances of success. From minimum required equipment, to basic lighting, to saving the files in an acceptable format and she'll discuss when it's time to bring in a pro! $20/ $15 for MARN members
November 28th, 2009 We all know what a great tool ArtInMilwauwkee.com is but it's only one page per artist. What do you do when you need more? You get your own website. If you're like so many artists you may be saying "But I HATE computers! How am I going to have a website? How can I afford it?" Michael Diedrick of Byte Studios will walk you through, step by step, everything you need to know about having your own presence on the web. From getting a domain name (what's that?!? don't worry he'll explain it) to finding a host, to using a template to build your site, to having a site custom built. You can't miss this workshop if you're considering a web presence! $20/ $15 for MARN members

Saturday February 20th, 2010 You've completed your most recent body of work. You need to talk about where that work came from. An artist's statement can mean the difference between someone giving your work the time to review it or just passing it by (and this is true for all types of artists; filmmakers to musicians, not just visual artists). Josie Osborne will help you write an effective and efficient artist's statement. If you already have an Artist's Statement you're encouraged to bring it along. Make sure to stick around for the afternoon's companion class Bio & Elevator Speech. $20/ $15 for MARN members
Saturday February 20th, 2010 So often we're faced with providing a bio for a program book or article and none of us like to toot our own horn (but we've got to provide one anyway). Josie Osborne will go through what should and should not be included in your bio. Plus how do you answer that age old question..."So what do you do?" ... in 30 seconds or less? With the "Elevator Speech" portion of this workshop you'll take your bio and convert it into an interesting synopsis that you can deliver in the time you'd spend with someone in an elevator. If you already have a bio you're encouraged to bring it along. $20/ $15 for MARN members
